‘A Safe Platform’
To the editor:
Thank you for “Abuse Was a Tool at Compound, Past Residents Say” [Feb. 19, front page], letting us hear the voices of adults who say they endured years of abuse as children at the Community of Jesus (CoJ) in Orleans.
Reading your article and listening to “The Cult on the Cape” podcasts produced by Rock Harbor Truth, I’m becoming more aware of what’s been going on for years behind the appealing facade of the CoJ. Exposing the truth and interviewing those who experienced the cruelty helps us as neighbors of the CoJ to be more cognizant of what we choose to support.
You also reported, last October, that the Arts Empowering Life performing arts center in Brewster was built by the CoJ with potentially illegal child labor. Some people don’t realize that when they take in a superb musical performance there, they are indirectly supporting abuse.
Child abuse prevention starts right here by giving the abused a safe platform to allow their stories to be told.
